Icono - La Madre de Dios, de Joi inesperado - Madera

This 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon is a finely painted devotional panel executed in the traditional tempera on wood with a gold ground. The central composition depicts the Mother of God holding the Christ Child in a tender, protective pose. Both figures are shown with halos, the Virgin clothed in deep burgundy and the Christ Child in contrasting robes, rendered with delicate facial features and fine linear highlights typical of provincial Russian workshops of the period. Flanking the central scene are standing saints in vertical side panels, each identified by Cyrillic inscriptions. The upper corners also contain additional holy figures, creating a multi-scene composition that combines Marian imagery with selected saints, likely chosen for personal or family devotion. At the lower center is a rectangular text panel with Old Church Slavonic script, characteristic of 19th-century icons intended for private prayer. The warm ochre and gold background, red framing borders, and stylized architectural elements reflect traditional iconographic conventions preserved in Russia well into the 1800s. The icon is painted on a single wooden panel with a recessed central field (kovcheg), and the surface shows age-appropriate wear, craquelure, and minor abrasions consistent with devotional use. A strong example of Russian Orthodox craftsmanship, suitable for collectors of religious art or icons.
