Good impression on wove paper. The Celestial Globe, depicting the southern hemisphere with the position of the stars for the period c.1499-1500, arranged within a circle and surrounded by the signs of the zodiac, in the top left corner the coat of arms of Cardinal Lang, in the top right ten lines dedication to the same within a laurel wreath, in the bottom left three coat of arms and five line inscription with the three names of the authors, and in the bottom right a twelve line inscription of the Imperial previlege granted by Maximilian to Stabius, the constellations labelled with inscriptions, above one line title inscription. c.1515 Woodcut The Latin title is: 'Imagines coeli Meridionales' The inscription on the bottom l : 'Ioann. Stabius ordinavit / Conradus Heinfogel stellas posuit / Albertus Durer imaginibus circumscripsit' This and the companion print of the northern hemisphere were commissioned by Johann Stabius, both based on earlier maps which had been prepared by Sebastian Sprenz and Conrad Heinfogel of Nuremberg. The woodblock is in Berlin.
