Volkswagen - T1 - 1965

GENERAL: Iconic Volkswagen T1 Splitscreen from 1965, originally ordered new in Darmstadt, Germany. This provenance is confirmed by the official Volkswagen AutoMuseum certificate of authenticity. The vehicle features the highly desirable SO42 Westfalia campmobile configuration, making it a true collector’s piece with both historical value and practical usability. BODY & PAINTWORK: The vehicle was fully repainted in 2018 in the original Volkswagen Mango Green (L346) combined with off-white, presenting very well overall. The paintwork remains in strong condition, with only minor imperfections including a small area of blistering on the rear window, light bubbling on the front valence corners, and a small section on the front roof. The underside of the front bumper shows minor scuffing. The chassis is in good condition, retaining its original chassis pans and showing signs of original factory treatment. Window seals and joints are in very good condition. Chrome elements, light surrounds, and trim pieces present well with a light, appropriate patina. The wing mirror stems also show a natural aged finish. Minor welding repairs have been carried out to four small areas of the front cab floor, as documented in the photos. TECHNICAL: The vehicle is powered by a 1775cc engine, built from the original 1500cc engine housing, paired with a 4-speed gearbox. The engine benefits from twin carburettors, delivering improved performance and drivability. A new clutch kit has been installed, and recent servicing includes fresh oils and filters, spark plugs, ignition cables, and verified valve clearances and timing. The bus starts easily and drives well, offering strong acceleration and smooth gear changes, enhanced by an Empi short shifter. Additional upgrades include a front Porsche 944 disc brake conversion, with drum brakes retained at the rear. The vehicle sits on classic Porsche Fuchs wheels fitted with Yokohama tyres. It has been lowered for improved stance and road presence. Further features include an auxiliary battery, engine-mounted fire extinguisher, and kill switch. INTERIOR: The interior retains its original SO42 Westfalia campmobile layout, including cupboards, storage compartments, spice rack, folding table/bed, gas stove, sink, interior lighting, curtains, and a pop-up roof providing standing room. The upholstery has been refreshed, with front and rear seats in good condition overall. The rear seat armrest shows a small tear. General wear is consistent with the vehicle’s age of 61 years. The dashboard features a retro-style radio with modern iPhone/iPod connectivity. All electrical systems are functioning correctly and appear tidy. DOCUMENTATION: The vehicle is supplied with UK V5C registration papers, export and import documentation, and the official Volkswagen AutoMuseum certificate confirming its origin. It also includes EU 846A customs certification with all fees paid, allowing for straightforward import into various EU countries. A comprehensive history file is present, including numerous invoices for parts and maintenance, as well as period magazines from Volkswagen publications. COLLECTION / DELIVERY: Delivery across Europe can be arranged. Please request a quote by providing your full postal address. OTHER INFORMATION: Approximately 10,000 km have been driven since restoration. The vehicle offers seating for five passengers, all equipped with seat belts, combining classic charm with practical usability. SUMMARY: A highly desirable and well-documented T1 Splitscreen with Westfalia SO42 specification, tasteful upgrades, and strong provenance—ideal for collectors, enthusiasts, or vintage travel experiences.
