The Observer is a work about the moment when you stop and look at something that is no longer there or that could have been. Not with regret, but with quiet, almost exploratory interest. At the center of the composition is an image assembled from fragments of light and shadow. It looks toward a blue, calm, almost marine area, the only quiet place in the painting. It could be a memory, a missed opportunity, or a parallel version of life where everything turned out differently. I don't want to specify this detail. All around is a neon orange and purple glow that is unsettling. This is not a background, it is the observer's environment. The world in which he lives is in constant tension, on the verge of collapse. Light from that other space falls on his face and mixes with the reflections of this one and it is impossible to understand where one ends and the other begins. The work speaks to something familiar to almost everyone: the habit of comparing what is with what was or could have been. How this view is both reassuring and disturbing. And how the veil between the present and everything else is too thin, it could close at any moment.
