A charming set of copperplate engraved views of Hormuz in Persia.
sheet sizes from 17 x 28 to 19,5 x 25 cm.
1. An anonymous copperplate engraving of Hormuz on the Persian Gulf, dating from around 1680. Features a striking ornamental border. Trimmed to the edge and mounted on handmade paper.
2. A copperplate engraving of the island and city of Hormuz (Latin: Ormus), situated at the entrance to the Persian Gulf. The title is centred at the top; numerous sailing ships are shown in the roadstead off the city; at the bottom right is the engraver’s monogram G.B. = the Flemish draughtsman and engraver Gaspar Bouttats (c. 1640–1695/1703) . He produced this copperplate engraving around 1690 in Antwerp for the publisher and geographer Jacob Peeters, and it appeared in Peeters’ topographical works, which contained views of cities in the Ottoman Empire, Persia and the Levant.
Conditions: one sheet with agetoning, otherwise in very good condition
