Michał Żytniak (born in 1982) is a Polish artist, painter, and musician whose artistic roots are deeply embedded in the neighborhood street culture of Częstochowa (Poland) at the turn of the century. Growing up amidst a fascination with design, fashion, and street graffiti, he developed his own uncompromising visual language. His paintings are highly intuitive, unconventional compositions in which he consciously avoids calculation and well-worn clichés. He creates authentic art that serves as a plastic extension of his keen urban observations. Today, Żytniak is one of the most recognizable figures on the Polish art scene. Suspended within a minimalist, pastel-pink, nearly sterile space, the central focus of the composition is a monumental, dark sofa. The titular "playing truant", traditionally a symbol of freedom and youthful carefreeness is sharply contrasted here with the bleak reality of prematurely entering an adult world of coping mechanisms to deal with tension.
