Moabit - Iberian Horizons X Before You Slip into Unconsciousness
Influenced by the dreamlike atmosphere of “The Crystal Ship” by The Doors, this work explores the fragile boundary between survival and surrender. Rather than illustrating the song, it captures its hypnotic sense of drifting away, where reality slowly dissolves into something both beautiful and inevitable.
Before You Slip into Unconsciousness portrays the final psychological stage of a desperate struggle against the sea. After hours of fighting the relentless waves, exhaustion overwhelms the body, and the instinct to survive begins to fade. The violent resistance gives way to an unexpected stillness. As consciousness gradually slips away, the surrounding darkness transforms into an overwhelming field of luminous forms. The sea is no longer experienced as water but as light, memory, and sensation.
The glowing circles represent the brain’s final interpretation of the world as oxygen deprivation alters normal perception. Scientific research suggests that during extreme hypoxia, the brain may experience brief surges of electrical activity while neurotransmitter systems become profoundly disrupted, producing vivid visual phenomena and dreamlike distortions of reality. In this work, those neurological changes become a language of colour and light. The horizon disappears, time slows, and fear slowly gives way to acceptance.
The viewer is left to question whether the brilliant light ahead represents rescue, memory, or the final transition into unconsciousness. The painting deliberately leaves that answer unresolved, allowing each person to confront the fragile space between hope and letting go. It is a meditation on human resilience and the quiet, deeply personal moment before awareness finally disappears.
Moabit has been painting for the past 29 years, gradually developing a distinctive visual language through decades of experimentation with abstraction, perception, and emotion. Iberian Horizons represents the culmination of these long-term artistic studies, introducing a mature body of work that marks the beginning of a new chapter, one the artist now feels is ready to share with the world.
For the fullest experience, play The Crystal Ship by The Doors, spend a few quiet moments with the painting, and allow the music and the image to unfold together. Let the work reveal itself at its own pace.
A similar breath taken by Vladinsky's art considering the black waves in the bottom.
