Roman Bronze Intaglio Ring – 1st to 3rd Century AD

A finely preserved Roman bronze intaglio ring, dating to the 1st to 3rd Century AD. The ring features a broad, tapering hoop supporting an oval bezel set with a dark stone intaglio, carved in low relief with what appears to be a stylized profile or bust. Although softened by age, the engraved gemstone retains its classical character, reflecting the Roman tradition of personal seal rings used both as adornment and as practical instruments for authenticating documents.

Intaglio rings occupied an important place in Roman society, serving as symbols of identity, social standing, and authority. The engraved gemstone would originally have been pressed into wax to create an individualized seal, while simultaneously functioning as an elegant piece of personal jewelry. Bronze examples such as this were widely worn throughout the Roman Empire by citizens, merchants, military personnel, and provincial elites.
