Descripción del vendedor

Die Papierfenster eines Eremiten – Karl Immermann

Hamm: Schulz und Wundermann, 1822. Viii, 184, [1] pages. 19cm x 11.5cm. Contemporary red half leather binding with gilt-framed marbled boards, gilt decorated and lettered spine with four raised bands, and marbled endpapers. First edition of this rare and culturally significant debut novel by the prominent Biedermeier and Romantic author Karl Immermann (1796–1840). Die Papierfenster eines Eremiten ("The Paper Windows of a Hermit") serves as a brilliant bridge between late German Romanticism and early social realism. Presented as a framed narrative “edited by Karl Immermann” ("Herausgegeben von Karl Immermann"), the book uses the popular epistolary and diary format of the era. The narrative follows the internal thoughts, emotional struggles, and philosophical observations of a reclusive intellectual (the "hermit"). Through these fragmented "paper windows," the text reflects on stifling provincial life, the rigid social conventions of 19th-century Germany, and the deep-seated psychological alienation of the intellectual class following the Napoleonic Wars. This specific first edition is highly celebrated in literary history for its bold, experimental structure—most notably featuring a deliberate typographical layout on pages 122 and 123. Left completely blank by the author, these pages serve as a brilliant, satirical protest against the oppressive Prussian press censorship of the era. Rather than succumbing to the censor's knife, Immermann openly invited the reader to fill the state-enforced silence with their own imagination, making this work a seminal artifact in the history of free speech and political satire in German literature.
Some rubbing, bumping, and wear to the boards and spine. Ex Libris sticker on the front pastedown endpaper. Pencil markings on the recto of the back free endpaper. Occasionally some creasing of the margins and corners and a few holes in the top margin. Moderate browning and spotting throughout. The text is clear and the binding is solid. Overall, a handsome copy in very good condition.
