I was born in Sofia, where I currently live and work. I hold a bachelor’s and master’s degree in mural painting from the National Academy of Arts in Sofia. I have participated in solo and group exhibitions, festivals, and biennials in Bulgaria and the United Kingdom. In 2022, I had the privilege of being a resident in the residency program at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. The work presents the word Barcelona, but with a subtle disruption: the letters C and E are replaced by close-up image of an open mouth, the tongue visibly twisted into the interdental position required to pronounce the Castilian "th" sound. The mouths interrupt the typography, transforming language into anatomy. Reading the word becomes a visual act of pronunciation rather than a purely linguistic one. The piece explores the tension between authenticity and performance in language. While Barcelona is internationally recognized and commonly pronounced with an "s" sound outside Spain, some visitors deliberately adopt the Castilian pronunciation—"Barthelona"—as a performative display of cultural awareness or sophistication. The exaggerated tongue becomes a symbol of linguistic self-consciousness: a small physical gesture loaded with social meaning. Typography and photography merge to create an uneasy rhythm. The clean graphic structure of the word is interrupted by fleshy, expressive images, making the viewer momentarily "feel" the pronunciation. The mouths function simultaneously as letters and as portraits of social performance, reminding us that speech is not only about communication but also about signaling belonging, education, status, or cultural capital. The work is a critique of the performative impulse to adopt pronunciation selectively as a marker of sophistication. It examines how language can become a form of social theater, where pronunciation shifts from authentic expression to cultural branding.
