ABOUT THE ARTWORK Takashi Murakami's work “Jellyfish Eyes Cream” is a representative example of Murakami's distinctive approach, which combines elements of Japanese pop culture with an abstract, hypnotic aesthetic. The composition is dominated by a multitude of large stylized eyes floating against a cream-colored background. The eyes, characterized by vivid green irises, red outlines, and white highlights that create a three-dimensional effect, vary in size, giving the sensation of fluid, almost organic movement. The irregularity of the arrangement and the hint of biomorphic shapes evoke a surreal world, as if the very surface of the work were alive. ABOUT THE ARTIST Takashi Murakami (Tokyo, Japan, 1962) Murakami is one of the most influential artists to come out of Japan in recent decades. With a PhD from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1983 and training in nihonga (a pictorial style focused on traditional Japanese techniques and themes), Murakami emerged from the Japanese Neo-pop generation after the economic bubble burst in that country in the late 1980s. Despite incorporating elements of his country's contemporary popular culture in the form of anime (animation) and manga (comics) into his work, he has continued to draw on traditional Japanese sources, from Buddhist iconography and 12th-century painting scrolls to Zen painting and the compositional techniques of eccentric painting from the 18th-century Edo period. The latter is characterised by the use of fantastical and unconventional images and the use of expressionist lines, representing a rejection of the realism and traditionalism of the time. Murakami's artistic practice creates a new interrelationship between high art and popular culture, which translates into his concept that art is part of the economy. The artist is renowned for forging a new business model based on the transformation of market strategies.
