Smash137 (1979) - Untitled (original painting on paper)

Created in 2012, this original painting on paper belongs to a particularly significant period in the practice of Smash 137 (Adrian Falkner), still deeply rooted in the language and culture of graffiti. The composition is structured around a dynamic form of writing, in which shapes and lines intersect and overlap, characteristic of the artist’s writing practice. The use of colour, dominated by vivid tones of orange, green and pink, enhances the sense of movement and rhythm, while the layering of gestures, lines and transparencies reflects a strong command of flow. This work represents a key moment in Smash 137’s practice, where painting on paper and graffiti writing remain closely intertwined, prior to the gradual evolution of his work towards more autonomous abstract forms. • Unique and original work on paper • Signed and dated on the front • Dimensions: 76 × 56 cm • Custom-made floating frame, museum-quality anti-reflective glass Smash 137 (Adrian Falkner, born 1979) is a Swiss-German artist based in Basel, who comes from graffiti, which he began practicing in the early 1990s. He quickly became known for a body of work focused on lettering, flow and rhythmic writing, developing a personal calligraphic language derived from his name. Alongside his activity as a writer, he developed a studio practice on canvas and paper, maintaining a direct continuity with the gesture and energy of graffiti while gradually expanding his pictorial vocabulary. From the mid-2010s onwards, his work evolved towards more autonomous and abstract forms, progressively moving away from legible writing and direct references to graffiti. This 2014 screen print therefore belongs to one of the last periods still fully rooted in Smash 137’s graffiti-based writing and visual language, prior to his shift towards a more distanced abstraction. - If you live in the Paris region, you can pick up the figure directly from our gallery located in the 11th arrondissement.
