Her short blonde hair is still tousled from sleep, her gaze lowered into a page she is not reading for the first time. Behind her another woman lies turned away beneath white linen, still deep in the kind of rest that follows a night where rest was the last thing anyone reached for. On the floor a pair of white lace knickers lies where they fell, and on the bed white roses rest against the sheets with the carelessness of flowers that arrived without ceremony and were never placed in water. The room is quiet and golden and full of the particular stillness that exists when two people have said everything with their bodies and now the words are catching up. She reads Baudelaire because Baudelaire wrote about this. About beauty that the century called sin. About flowers that bloom precisely because they were told they should not.
