Layers of pigment, dragged and scraped marks, interruptions and changes in density remain visible across the surface, giving the work a sense of motion even within its still image. The intense red field gradually gives way to darker, heavier passages, while a solitary figure emerges from, and almost disappears back into, the landscape. The figure is deliberately left open to interpretation. In the spirit of Roland Barthes’ The Death of the Author, the meaning of a work does not ultimately belong to the person who made it; once the painting leaves the studio, the viewer is free to bring their own experience, memory and imagination to it. The figure may be leaving, arriving, remembering, searching, waiting, or something entirely different. There is no single answer intended. What matters to me is that the painting remains alive in the hands of the viewer. The work was made with passion and with particular attention to its atmosphere, movement and physical surface. It is an original painting intended to be lived with, looked at and discovered over time.
