Madame de Staël Holstein - De l'Allemagne - 1813

Complete three-volume early 19th-century edition of De l’Allemagne, Madame de Staël’s seminal and controversial study of German literature, philosophy, and culture. First published in 1810 and famously suppressed by Napoleon, the work played a decisive role in introducing German Romantic thought to France and the wider European intellectual world. This set represents the London re-issue of the Paris stereotype edition, printed by John Murray in 1813 for circulation outside Napoleonic France. It is a historically important early printing closely associated with the work’s exile and international dissemination. ⸻ Condition • Text blocks complete and solid • Contemporary calf bindings with attractive patina • Loose boards present • Spines rubbed with surface wear and cracking at joints • Internally clean overall with light to moderate age-spotting (foxing), consistent with period • No missing pages; margins ample ⸻ Bookplate & Provenance Each volume bears a finely engraved armorial bookplate featuring: • A crest with a bear’s head above a circular shield • Latin motto: “Esto quod audes” (“Be what you dare”) • Handwritten ownership inscription: “C. S. Tandy” This bookplate corresponds to the Tandy family, an Anglo-Irish lineage associated with educated professional and landed circles in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. While the precise individual “C. S. Tandy” cannot be definitively identified without estate records, the armorial engraving and Latin motto are entirely consistent with gentleman-collector ownership of the period and add historical interest and provenance value. The books were bought from at auction in Ireland from the private library of a gentleman collector. ⸻ Significance • One of the foundational texts of European Romanticism • Central to 19th-century debates on nationalism, literature, and philosophy • Influential on figures such as Goethe, Coleridge, and later liberal thinkers • Early Murray London issue closely linked to the book’s political suppression and exile history
