The god stands upright and wears a Corinthian helmet pushed up with a crest and a short, belted chiton. His right hand is raised and originally held a spear, while his left hand is slightly extended forward – presumably to hold an attribute such as a patera or shield. The figure is cast in solid bronze and has an even, dark brown to black-green patina. The lower legs are missing. The depiction follows classical Mars types from the Roman Empire and shows the god in a simplified, provincial style. Such small bronzes often served as household or travel deities, i.e. as small cult images in private settings. Provenance: Formerly from an old German antique collection. Acquired before 1995 in the German art trade. Most recently in the South German estate collection H.N.
