E.G. Webster & Son, New York - E. G. Webster & Son, New York - Shaker per cocktail - Placcato argento

Antique cocktail shaker, fine Victorian repoussé decorations, silver-plated, by Webster & Son, U.S.A., ca. 1890. The antique E.G. Webster & Son repoussé silver-plated cocktail shaker is an impressive example of Victorian-era silversmithing. Repoussé decorations are a complex process in which a malleable metal is artfully shaped by hammering from the back to create a relief pattern. Great dexterity is required to ensure that the faces and all the details appear accurately. Heavily embossed, with decoration covering the entire exterior, with corked lid, both richly decorated with flowers, hatching, neck and flange with flower baskets, with birds in the midst of a cornucopia, the body with figurative panels with figures dancing in the countryside on one side, on the other side with figures playing the cello and viola, with birds with outstretched wings in the midst of blooming flowers. Marked on the base: EGW&S = E. G. Webster & Son. The hallmark was used from 1886 to 1928. The Elizur G. Webster company began silver plating in 175 Broadway, New York, in 1860. Height 25.50 cm, diameter of spout 2.4 cm, diameter of shoulder 12 cm, with handle 16 cm. In good antique condition. The neck appears slightly dented on one side near the handle. Part of the cup has a slight copper sheen, probably due to excessive cleaning with silver cleaner. Base shows signs of wear. Provenance: From the personal collection of the famous Spanish designer and artist Eric Yerno. Weight: 700 g.
