Thomas - Servizio da caffè (12) - Porcellana - Mosaic Gold

This exceptional six‑piece demitasse set represents a rare artistic synthesis between two great European stylistic eras: the refined, organically flowing Jugendstil form of early Thomas Bavaria porcelain, and the bold, vibrant, avant‑garde early Art Deco decoration applied by the private studio marked “P & S”. The whiteware blanks were produced by Thomas, Marktredwitz (Bavaria), bearing the underglaze blue shield mark without dating dots, a hallmark used between 1908 and 1922. The cup design — with its finely curved Jugendstil handle and clean vertical silhouette — reflects the elegant aesthetic language of the 1910s, while the vivid, hand‑applied overglaze decoration unmistakably belongs to the emerging modernist spirit circa 1918–1922. The decoration itself is extraordinarily striking: an audacious, richly coloured composition of abstracted floral elements, executed in saturated tones of orange, turquoise, pink, yellow and black, enhanced with shimmering gold. This stylistic approach is highly unusual for the period and demonstrates an early move from late Jugendstil ornament towards the expressive geometry and colourism that would later define Art Deco. The overglaze mark “P & S” within a laurel wreath identifies the decorator’s studio, while a separate green crown overmark indicates the retailer or trading house for whom this small, exclusive series was produced. Dimensions: • Cups: approx. 60 ml capacity, 4.8 cm diameter, 5 cm height • Saucers: approx. 11.2 cm diameter The overall condition of the set is excellent: colours remain vivid, the gilding is beautifully preserved, and the porcelain surface is clean and bright. Only one saucer shows a discreet area of wear, clearly indicated with a “1” in the photographs; all other pieces are in outstanding condition for their age. Uniting a delicate Jugendstil form with an exceptionally bold and artistically confident early Art Deco surface design, this set stands as a rare and highly decorative artefact from a transitional moment in Bavarian porcelain artistry. It is an exceptional acquisition for collectors of Art Nouveau, early Art Deco and hand‑decorated European porcelain.
