Antique Dutch Brass Wall Salt Box (Zoutbak) – Late 19th Century In the late 1800s and early 1900s, salt needed to be kept dry, and these boxes were designed to hang on the kitchen wall near the hearth or stove so the warmth of the fire prevented moisture from clumping the salt. The top features two winged cherubs flanking a central pillar in a Neoclassical design, suggesting it was made as a household object for an aristocratic home. The front panel displays a hammered repoussé bird motif (a pheasant or peacock) surrounded by floral swags and geometric punch work. Made of brass, the visible solder lines and slightly uneven hinge construction indicate handmade work rather than modern factory production. The greyish interior patina reflects long-term storage of salt or spices, where mineral contact with the metal developed naturally over decades. Condition: Lovely antique condition.
