Roma antica Terracotta Capo del dio Serapide
Large Terracotta Head of God Serapis wearing the
Modius (13 cm, 435 g)
Culture/Region: Roman Egypt (Alexandrian influence) /
Roman Empire
Period: 1st - 3rd Century A.D.
Material: Terracotta
Dimensions: Height 13 cm; Weight 435 g
Description:
A substantial and heavy terracotta head depicting the syncretic Greco-Egyptian god Serapis. The deity is portrayed with his characteristic thick, curly hair and full beard. Atop his head, he wears the modius (a grain measure), symbolizing abundance, fertility, and the underworld.
The piece has a flat, stable base, allowing it to stand completely freestanding without the need for modern supports. This suggests it may have been a votive object or part of a domestic shrine (lararium). The significant size (13 cm) and weight (nearly half a kilo) make it a piece of strong visual presence.
Condition:
Authentic ancient condition. The terracotta shows surface wear and smoothing to the facial features consistent with age and burial. Earthy encrustations and mineral deposits are visible deep within the recesses of the hair, beard, and the base of the modius, confirming its antiquity. No modern restorations.
Provenance:
Belgian private collection 1970
