Truman Capote – In Cold Blood – Easton Press – 2000 - Great Books of the 20th Century Series This Easton Press edition presents Capote's account of the 1959 murder of the Clutter family in Holcomb, Kansas and its aftermath. First serialized in The New Yorker and published as a book in 1966, In Cold Blood established what Capote called the nonfiction novel, applying the techniques of fiction to reported fact. The work took six years to complete, during which Capote conducted hundreds of interviews and compiled thousands of pages of notes, including extended conversations with the killers Perry Smith and Dick Hickock on death row. The book follows two parallel narratives: the final day of the Clutter family and the drifting path of Smith and Hickock toward the farmhouse, then traces the investigation, capture, trial, and execution. Capote was present at the hanging. The dedication to Jack Dunphy and Harper Lee acknowledges the two people closest to the project, Lee having accompanied Capote to Kansas during his initial research. This edition features illustrations by Alan Reingold, including a frontispiece portrait of the two killers that captures the unsettling intimacy Capote achieved with his subjects.
