Dan Tribal Mask – Ivory Coast / Liberia
This carved wooden mask originates from the Dan people of West Africa, primarily located in Ivory Coast and Liberia. Dan masks play an important role in social and ritual life and are traditionally used during ceremonies, dances, and community events.
The mask presents the typical elongated face associated with Dan sculpture, with narrow slit eyes, a prominent straight nose and a slightly open mouth revealing teeth. These expressive features give the mask a strong presence and character. The small crest on the top of the head and the carved ears further enhance the sculptural balance of the piece.
Carved from a single piece of wood, the mask displays a beautiful dark patina consistent with age and handling. Surface wear, small marks and natural irregularities testify to its history and traditional use.
Dan masks are appreciated by collectors for their elegant proportions, expressive faces and their importance in African tribal art traditions.
Origin: Ivory Coast / Liberia
Ethnic group: Dan
Material: Wood
Period: 20th century
Condition: Good condition with visible signs of age and use.
Stand used for display purposes only. The mask is sold without the stand.
