DESCRIPTION
INTRODUCTION
A fine Kamba decorated calabash vessel distinguished by its elegant proportions, richly engraved surface and beautiful old leather harness. Combining utility, ornament and strong visual presence, this is a particularly appealing example of East African decorated gourd work.
ETHNOGRAPHIC CONTEXT
Among the Kamba of Kenya, gourd vessels form part of a long-established tradition in which everyday containers were often enhanced through incision, pyro-engraving and the addition of other materials such as leather or fibre. Comparable museum examples confirm the association of Kamba gourds with leather carrying elements and finely engraved decoration.
FORM AND DECORATION
This example has a notably graceful bottle-shaped profile, with a broad rounded body, narrowing shoulder and elongated neck. The surface is densely decorated with pyro-engraved animal motifs arranged in large panels, including elephants, giraffes and reptilian creatures, together with geometric bands on the neck and shoulder. The decoration is both lively and well organized, giving the vessel strong rhythm and excellent readability.
MOUNTING AND SURFACE
The neck is finished with a sewn collar of cord and vegetal fibres, and the original wooden stopper is preserved. The vessel is further enhanced by a finely made leather harness with carrying strap, which frames the body and reinforces its practical character. The calabash has developed a deep, warm patina of use, especially attractive across the rounded body and upper neck.
CONDITION
Good overall condition.
Fine patina of use.
Age-related wear, abrasions and small surface marks consistent with handling and use.
Leather elements show wear consistent with age.
No stand. The photographic stand is not included.
