The schematic volutes that decorate the corners are a clear inheritance from the classical Ionic order, reinterpreted with the austerity typical of the Romanesque style. The carving is robust and somewhat rough, suggesting an architectural rather than ornamental function, probably as a support for an arch in a cloister or gallery. The material provides a polished and resistant texture, although visible erosion denotes its age and exposure to the elements.
