Medievale Ceramica brocca (Senza prezzo di riserva)

ITEM: Jug MATERIAL: Pottery CULTURE: Medieval PERIOD: 14th Century A.D DIMENSIONS: 203 mm x 140 mm CONDITION: Good condition PROVENANCE: Ex German private collection, acquired before 1990s The 14th century was a transformative era for European pottery, marked by a shift from purely functional, coarse-ware vessels toward more refined and decorative ceramics. During this period, the production of highly glazed jugs and pitchers became a hallmark of the craft, particularly in regions like England and France. These vessels often featured lead glazes in vibrant shades of copper green or honey yellow. Innovations in kiln technology allowed potters to achieve higher temperatures, leading to the rise of stoneware in the Rhineland, which offered a durable, non-porous alternative to traditional earthenware. In terms of aesthetics, potters began to draw inspiration from contemporary metalwork and gothic architecture. Vessels were frequently adorned with applied clay decorations, such as scales, scrolls, or stylized floral motifs. In the Mediterranean, particularly in Spain and Italy, the influence of Islamic techniques led to the development of maiolica and tin-glazed lusterwares. These pieces were prized for their brilliant, opaque white surfaces and intricate blue or golden patterns, signaling a growing demand for "display" pottery that served as a status symbol for the emerging merchant class. The late 1300s also saw a practical evolution in domestic life that dictated pottery forms. As culinary habits changed, the variety of specialized shapes increased to include dripping pans, chafing dishes, and specialized cooking pots designed to withstand the heat of a hearth. Despite the devastation of the Black Death mid-century, which temporarily thinned the ranks of skilled artisans, the industry proved resilient. By the close of the century, the transition from local, village-based production to organized, regional ceramic industries was well underway, setting the stage for the artistic explosions of the Renaissance.
