Set photography has existed since the early days of cinema, and consists of using a camera to take stills that can be used as publicity material for the film. But Haas's ambition was to inscribe a temporal dimension in his images, to impose his principles on the still photographs which, seen one after the other, generate movement and a narrative.

'Nel 1947, lo 'Rotes Kreuz' ('Red Cross') utilizzò il reportage e le fotografie di Ernst Haas per identificare o riunire vittime di guerra, pubblicato successivamente in una feature su Life magazine. Warren Trabant mostrò le fotografie 'Homecoming' di Haas a Robert Capa, prima della loro pubblicazione. Dopo aver esaminato il suo lavoro, Capa invitò Haas a Parigi per unirsi al then two-year-old international photographic cooperative MAGNUM Photos. Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, David Chim Seymour, Werner Bischof e William Vandivert erano già membri. Nel 1950, Ernst Haas divenne allora membro a pieno titolo di MAGNUM.
Nel 1954, Robert Capa, primo presidente della Magnum, fu ucciso in missione durante la guerra d’Indocina. Nello stesso anno, Werner Bischof morì in un incidente d’auto negli Andes. Dopo le loro morti, Haas fu eletto nel consiglio di MAGNUM e viaggiò lui stesso in Indocina per coprire la guerra.
Nel 1958, Haas diventò vicepresidente di MAGNUM. Dopo la morte di David 'Chim' Seymour a Suez nel 1959, Haas divenne il quarto presidente di MAGNUM nel 1960. Fece contributi significativi e duraturi all’organizzazione come suo leader. Haas aveva una profonda comprensione della missione della cooperativa e incoraggiò i suoi membri a cercare l’eccellenza e l’innovazione. In una lettera ai membri di Magnum, scrisse:
'Each of us wants to make beautiful, eye-catching and extraordinary images.
