Time of Mithradates VI Eupator. Struck circa 105-85 BC. Obverse: Aegis with Gorgoneion at center. Reverse: ΑΜΙ-ΣΟΥ, Nike advancing right, holding a palm branch over her shoulder; monogram to lower right. Diameter: 20,5 mm Weight: 5,49 gr Condition: See photos for condition, zoom in if needed. Reference: SNG Cop.167 var; SNG BM Black Sea 1177-91; HGC 7, 242 Historical Context: This bronze issue was struck at Amisos during the height of the Pontic Kingdom under Mithradates VI Eupator, Rome’s most formidable opponent in the East. The iconography is deeply rooted in the military and religious identity of the kingdom. The obverse features the Aegis, the protective shield of Athena or Zeus, centered with the Gorgoneion—a symbol of power and protection meant to terrify enemies. The reverse depicts Nike, the personification of victory, which served as potent propaganda for Mithradates’ ongoing campaigns and his self-presentation as a liberator of the Greek world. Amisos was a vital commercial and military port on the Black Sea, and these substantial bronze coins circulated widely across the Pontic territories during the Mithradatic Wars.
