The coinage reflects the strong influence of the Kingdom of Pontos during the era of Mithridates VI Eupator. The obverse features Perseus, a hero claimed as an ancestor by the Mithridatic dynasty, symbolizing the royal connection and military prestige of the region. The reverse displays a cornucopia—representing the maritime and agricultural wealth of the city—flanked by the pilei of the Dioskouroi (Castor and Pollux). These twin deities were traditionally invoked as protectors of mariners, a fitting motif for a city whose economy and survival depended heavily on Euxine sea trade. The presence of the stars atop the caps signifies their divine nature and role as guiding lights for sailors.
