The protruding rounded snout and softly contoured form are characteristic of monkey masks, while the execution is notably abstract and expressive, giving it a strong sculptural presence beyond conventional theatrical use. Kagura is an ancient form of Shinto ritual performance that combines music, dance, and storytelling, traditionally performed at shrines to honor the gods and invite blessings. Animal figures such as monkeys appear in various regional Kagura traditions, often symbolizing protection, vitality, or acting as messengers of the divine. The exterior is finished in a deep charcoal-grey tone, with vivid red accents around the eyes and mouth creating a strong visual contrast. The mask is carved from solid wood, with clearly visible chisel marks across both the exterior and interior. This finish highlights the hand-crafted nature of the piece and gives it a strong, tactile presence. A thick red cord is attached, suitable for display or use. Condition is vintage with visible signs of age and use. There is surface wear, including scuffs, minor paint loss, natural aging, and small scratches around the edges. These elements contribute to its character and do not affect its structural integrity. Please refer to the photographs. Dimensions: approx.
