Very fine sumi-e painting "Nightingale and pine amidst snow", singed - including tomobako - Matsumura Goshun (1752-1811) - Giappone - Periodo Edo (1600-1868)

Matsumura Goshun (1752-1811) was a founder of the Shijo school of painting. He was born in Kyoto as the oldest of six children in the wealthy family that had served as officials in the gold mint and currency exchange in Kyoto for many generations. His parents wished him to be well educated in the basics of Chinese and Japanese culture and had him tutored in skills such as classical history and literature, calligraphy and painting as well as writing poetry, but in the late 1770s he left that family position to become a painter. In Kyoto first studied painting under Onishi Suigetsu, a student of Mochizuki Gyokusen, then studied painting and haiku poetry under Yosa Buson. His wife and father died in 1781 (Tenmei l), and he moved to Ikeda (Osaka Prefecture) on the advice of Buson. After Buson's death, returned to Kyoto to study the painting style of Maruyama Okyo. He asked him to become his disciple, but Okyo firmly declined. The older friend had declined his offer to accept him as disciple stating he wanted him to remain on equal footing with his younger friend. So Goshun as a close friend studied Okyo's painting and sketching. He established a style that combined literati painting and sketching, called a ‘Shijo school’ after the location of Goshun's residence and workplace (because he settled in Shijo, Kyoto). He refined his own blend of literati-stile brushwork and decorative Maruyama-style composition and techniques. Matsumura Goshun’s works are in the collections of the Metropoliten museum, the British museum, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Miho Museum, Tokyo Fuji Art museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, among others. Roller ends: wood. Measurements: Scroll: 192 x 49 cm painting: 106 x 36 cm Very good condition, there are signs of wear due to age and normal use, stains, marks; please, see pictures for actual condition.
