A Large Chinese Terracotta Attendant Figure, Northern Wei Dynasty, 7th to 10th Century A.D.
Striking large terracotta figure of a male attendant or official, standing an impressive 57 cm in height. The figure is depicted in a dynamic pose with one arm raised and the other extended, wearing a tall official hat, layered robes with detailed folds, and expressive facial features. The surface shows a characteristic light earthen tone with traces of burial encrustation and remains of original pigment.
Figures of this type were produced as tomb attendants during the Northern Wei period and later dynasties, serving as protectors or servants in the afterlife. Large examples of this scale and quality are highly sought after for their sculptural presence and historical importance.
