Exceptional Ancient Roman Chalcedony Agate Intaglio – Zeus Enthroned with Eagle
A magnificent ancient Roman chalcedony agate intaglio depicting Zeus enthroned with an eagle.
This remarkable Roman agate intaglio is carved from a three-layered stone. The first layer is honey-colored, the second layer is white, and the third layer is dark brown. Zeus is depicted standing by his throne with an eagle.
1st Century BC – 1st Century AD
Dimensions: 20 × 10 × 7 mm
Zeus stands by his throne, holding a scepter in his right hand and a thunderbolt in his left. The deity is portrayed with thick hair and a full beard, a muscular physique, and a bare torso. He wears a draped garment with prominent folds revealing the structure of his knees and feet. To the left, at his feet, an eagle gazes toward him. A ground line is visible beneath the scene.
The subject was likely inspired by a sculptural model. The engraving demonstrates exceptionally precise anatomical rendering, with an impressive relief effect that is almost three-dimensional. A beautiful work carved on a double-convex honey-colored agate stone divided into three layers. Minor signs of wear are present.
Previously owned in Spain (private collection) and acquired in 1987 from an antiquities gallery/dealer.
This rare intaglio is accompanied by its original purchase invoice and a certificate of authenticity.
