First edition of this posthumous collection of articles, essays, and travel reviews written by Théophile Gautier throughout his career. The book is essentially a literary exploration of the Orient (the East), blending Gautier’s actual travel experiences with his "fantasized" or romanticized visions of distant lands. Some rubbing, bumping, and wear to the boards and spine. Book Nr. Sticker on the front pastedown endpaper in both volumes, Pencil markings on the recto of the front free endpaper, and the verso of the back free endpaper in Vol I. Very little browning and spotting throughout. The text is clear, the paper is crisp, and the binding is solid in both volumes. Overall, an attractive set in very good+ condition.
