A substantial official Byzantine bronze weight of circular form, bearing on one face the image of Megas, Count of the Sacred Largesses, a high-ranking imperial official associated with the administration of the state treasury and financial revenues of the Byzantine Empire.
The figure is depicted facing forward in official attire, surrounded by a circular halo, with details of the garment and insignia still discernible despite age and wear. The presence of such an imperial official on standardized weights reflects direct governmental oversight of commercial weights and measures used throughout the empire.
The surface displays an attractive aged patina with ancient green oxidation deposits characteristic of long-term bronze burial and preservation. These features contribute to the authenticity and historical appeal of the piece.
This weight represents an important example of Byzantine economic administration and official metrological control, making it a desirable artifact for collectors of Byzantine antiquities, ancient weights, and historical trade-related objects.
Condition: Excellent.
Acquired in 2025 from Demeter Coins Falk Zünkler in Germany.
Provenance: The piece was formerly part of a private collection in Spain, having been acquired in 1987 from an antiquities dealer or gallery.
