This vase was created by Tokuda Masahiko, the ceramic artist who would later succeed to the name of the Third Generation Yasokichi Tokuda and be designated a Living National Treasure of Japan (Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property). Tokuda Masahiko is recognized as one of the leading figures in modern Kutani ware. While traditional Kutani ceramics developed primarily through overglaze enamel decoration, Tokuda pursued the expressive possibilities of glaze itself and established the distinctive “Saiyu” technique. His innovative artistic approach is widely regarded as having expanded the expressive range of Kutani ware. Saiyu is a technique that creates rich color transitions and depth through the layering of multiple colored glazes rather than painted decoration. This vase displays a blue-centered Saiyu composition with smooth gradations and deep, vibrant coloration. Depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions, the surface reveals subtle variations in expression, showcasing one of the most distinctive characteristics of Tokuda’s work. The base bears the signature “Tokuda Masahiko.” This was the artist’s name before he succeeded to the title of the Third Generation Yasokichi Tokuda in 1988. As such, this work belongs to the period when he was actively producing under the name “Tokuda Masahiko,” prior to the succession. The piece is therefore of particular interest as an example from an important stage in the career of the artist who would later become a Living National Treasure. The original tomobako (signed wooden storage box) accompanies the work.
