Animated by Walker Evans and influenced by Henri Cartier-Bresson and his philosophy of the Decisive Moment she started in the 1930s to develop a distinctive style, coined by Evans as “anti-journalism“. The streets of the poorer New York districts were transformed to stages of everyday life by the lens of Levitt's camera. The photographer herself presents her most iconic works in this volume, supplemented by formerly unpublished colour photographs.
