Descrizione del venditore
S.W. Clifford (British, late XIX) - Wooded Landscape with Waterfall.
92 x 61 cm.
Oil on canvas, unframed.
Signed lower left: "S.W. Clifford".
S.W. Clifford was a British painter active in the second half of the 19th century, whose work falls within the tradition of the English Romantic landscape school. His work reveals a solid mastery of atmospheric rendering and a sensitive handling of light filtered through vegetation, in keeping with the models of Victorian landscape painting.
The painting depicts a wooded ravine crossed by a stream cascading over moss-covered boulders, while in the background a metal trellis bridge spans the stream amidst the canopy of trees. The composition is constructed in depth, with the dimly lit foreground gradually opening towards a bright central area. The brushstrokes are accurate in rendering the foliage and moving water, with a well-balanced palette of greens and browns.
Condition report: Original canvas. The painted surface is in good condition, with signs of aging and wear.
