Albrecht Dürer - Apocalypsis Cum Figuris - 1790

A complete suite of Albrecht Dürer's Apocalypsis cum Figuris — the title woodcut plus all fifteen plates illustrating the Book of Revelation — printed in German text edition from Dürer's original 1498 pearwood blocks, on laid paper. This is a late 18th-century impression (c. 1790), retaining the original 1498 woodcuts and colophon as was standard antiquarian practice for this period. The set is complete and unbound: eight large bifolio sheets, each carrying two woodcut illustrations on the recto faces and the corresponding German Gothic-letter text on the conjugate versos, exactly preserving the original 1498 layout and textual apparatus (including the prefatory "vorred" and full chapter text). Subjects included: Title woodcut; St. John before God and the Elders; St. John's Vision of the Seven Candlesticks; The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse; The Opening of the Fifth and Sixth Seals; The Four Angels Staying the Winds; St. John Devouring the Book; The Woman Clothed with the Sun; St. Michael Fighting the Dragon; The Beast with Two Horns Like a Lamb; The Adoration of the Lamb; The Wh0re of Babylon; St. John before God and the Elders (the Seven Angels with Trumpets); The Angel with the Key to the Abyss; The New Jerusalem; The Four Angels of the Euphrates. Format: Unbound, large bifolio sheets, 48.1 cm x 65 cm open (approx. 48.1cm height x 32.5cm closed). Laid paper, no visible watermark (margins trimmed, the watermark was on the corners prior to it being trimmed). Condition: Complete set of 16 woodcuts (title + 15 plates). Condition varies across the sheets — Some have some slight foxing on the edges, some have stronger impressions than others but overral acceptable. Sold as found, unrestored unless noted. (Images taken under yellow-ish light which may have resulted in a slight yellowing of the overral pages. Possibly more white in certain areas when not under direct light). Dating: Dating to the 18th century is based on comparison with publicly documented examples and examples held in private collections, together with physical examination by ANNO's in-house specialists and an additional opinion provided by Catawiki's own experts. We will do our best to accomodate questions after the purchase. Provenance: Accompanied by a certificate of provenance prepared by ANNO, tracing the print to the collection of Alexandre de Cortegraça Bernardo-Brissos, in whose family's collection it has remained since. It will only include the following information and details: Year of birth, professional activity, when it's suspected he might've acquired this item / collection, for how long it's been held by the family, some other rather small details and an ex-libris (not printed, inked on the actual paper); if you'd prefer it signed as well, please send us a message straight away after purchase so we can include it. We will do our best to accomodate questions after the purchase. Reference literature: Bartsch 60-75; Meder 163-179 (woodblocks); Schoch, Mende & Scherbaum, Albrecht Dürer: Das druckgraphische Werk.
