Poltrona (4) - Quercia - 4 Barocco spagnolo 1880

A Rare Set of Five Spanish Baroque Armchairs in Solid Oak with Original Hand-Forged Construction and Aged Leather – Late 19th Century This exceptional set of five Spanish Baroque armchairs represents the robust craftsmanship for which Iberian furniture from the late 19th is renowned. Constructed entirely from solid oak, the chairs retain their traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs, with no modern mechanical fasteners forming part of the original construction. Several details strongly support an early date: Hand-turned stretchers and baluster supports, displaying the subtle irregularities characteristic of period craftsmanship rather than machine production. Heavy square oak rails with extensive natural wear developed over centuries of use. Traditional pegged joinery throughout the frame, consistent with furniture made before industrial manufacturing methods. Thick vegetable-tanned leather seat, back and armrests secured with individually applied brass upholstery nails. Beautiful, untouched patina on both the oak and the leather, accumulated through generations of careful use. Pronounced edge wear, oxidation and shrinkage in the timber, all typical signs of genuine age. The leather has recently been nourished with a light application of beeswax only, preserving its historic appearance without altering its original character. According to the previous owner, the chairs originate from the contents of a large historic Spanish villa, where they had remained for many years before entering a private upholstery workshop. Fortunately, they were never over-restored, allowing the authentic surface, construction and age-related character to survive. Rather than being perfect, these chairs display exactly the honest wear, tool marks and construction techniques collectors expect to find in genuine early Spanish furniture. Their substantial proportions, original craftsmanship and remarkable survival as a complete set make them highly desirable for collectors of Spanish, Mediterranean and Baroque interiors. An increasingly rare opportunity to acquire a matching set of five authentic early Spanish armchairs, retaining the warmth, character and integrity developed over more than three centuries.
