Mado Akete (Opening the Window) - Iwao Akiyama (秋山巌) - Giappone

【Description】 This is a representative woodblock print by Iwao Akiyama, in which a haiku by Santoka Taneda — “Mado akete mado ippai no haru” (Open the window, and spring fills it completely) — is woven directly into the contours of the face and hair. The text and image are not kept separate; each swirling strand of hair flows and overlaps with the characters of the poem, creating a composition rarely seen in his other woodblock works. Shading is built entirely from gradations of black and soft gray tones, resembling diluted black ink, while a single touch of vermilion at the lips draws the eye across the otherwise quiet composition. This is a single hand-pulled impression on handmade Japanese paper (washi), where the natural fibre texture remains visible. As ink density varies slightly with each pull, no two impressions from the same block look exactly alike. A confirmed 1989 work, pencil-signed by the artist, stamped with his seal, and numbered 147/200. It comes in a wooden frame, ready to display. 【Specifications】 Artist: Iwao Akiyama (秋山巌) Technique: Woodblock print (hand-pulled) on Japanese paper (washi) Title: Mado Akete (Opening the Window) Poem featured: Santoka Taneda, “Mado akete mado ippai no haru” Year: 1989 Edition: 147/200 Signature: Pencil-signed by the artist, with his seal 【Size】 Paper size: 61 cm (H) × 46 cm (W) Frame size: 77 cm (H) × 59 cm (W) Weight (framed): approx. 2,330 g 【Condition】 As shown in the photographs, there is no notable damage.
