Jacques Van Rooten (Belgian, 20th century) — Heather in bloom on the Kalmthout Heath. Oil on canvas. A sandy path winds through flowering heather towards a low rise, under a wide sky with sunlit clouds. The heather is painted in dense, textured strokes of purple, pink and deep brown, with the pale path cutting a bright line through the composition down to the open horizon. The whole scene glows in the warm light of late summer, when the heath turns purple. Signed lower left. The reverse carries the artist's own title inscription: "Achter de Markgraaf te Kalmthout" — behind De Markgraaf at Kalmthout, a precise location on the Kalmthout Heath north of Antwerp, today part of the protected Grenspark Kalmthoutse Heide nature reserve. The stretcher is signed again "J. Van Rooten". Van Rooten is recorded in the RKD (Netherlands Institute for Art History) and painted the Kalmthout Heath repeatedly; works from this series appear at auction under his name. The painting is presented in a carved giltwood frame with a cream linen-style inner slip — an elegant combination that suits the warm palette. Condition: Good The paint layer is in good condition, with the rich impasto intact. The canvas is on its original stretcher; the reverse is clean with period inscriptions. The gilt frame shows minor wear and small rubbed spots consistent with age. No damage, repairs or restorations observed. Measurements: Canvas: Height: 24 cm, Width: 30 cm.
