Antique Safari-Style Folding Chair with Embroidered Linen Upholstery
A distinctive late 19th-century folding chair with a portable, safari-style construction and turned wooden frame featuring bamboo-like segmented forms. The chair retains its original coarse natural linen upholstery, extensively decorated with hand-worked floral and foliate embroidery in muted red, green, ochre and brown tones.
The backrest and seat features a symmetrical composition of stylised flowers, leaves and scrolling foliage. The combination of the folding construction, exoticising bamboo-like frame and richly worked textile reflects the eclectic decorative taste of the late 19th century, while the coarse linen gives the piece a distinctly vernacular character.
The chair bears the visible traces of a long history of use. The linen has faded unevenly and shows areas of wear, staining and repair, while the wooden frame has accumulated abrasions, naturally aged patina. These interventions and imperfections form an integral part of the object, preserving evidence of its continued use over time.
An unusual piece of antique furniture, combining a highly distinctive folding form with richly decorated textile upholstery and the accumulated traces of age, repair and use.
Condition: Antique condition with age-related fading, wear, staining and visible repairs to the embroidered linen upholstery. The wooden frame shows scratches, abrasions, woodworm damage and general signs of use. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description.
