This work belongs to Panamarenko’s long-running series of drawings, models, and sculptures exploring mechanical movement and walking machines. Machines That Walk reflects Panamarenko’s fascination with engineering, robotics, and the dream of creating machines that imitate nature. Rather than designing practical inventions, he created poetic and imaginative prototypes that blur the line between art and science. His works invite viewers to imagine new ways of moving through the world, even if the machines are not intended to function in everyday life. Although Panamarenko carefully studied physics, mechanics, and aerodynamics, he often said that making a perfectly working machine was not his main goal. For him, the beauty of invention and the power of imagination were more important than technical success. Many of his extraordinary flying and walking machines remained prototypes, celebrating curiosity and human creativity rather than utility. Panamarenko's work is included in the collections of all major museums in Belgium. In 2002 he donated his parental home in Antwerp to the Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp (MuHKA).
