Since the Middle Ages, the monks of the Abbey of Aulne brewed two kinds of beer. In 1752 the brewery was destroyed by a fire, but in 1796 it was rebuilt. However, before 1850 the brewing activities of the abbey had entirely ceased.
Abbaye d'Aulne beer made a comeback in 1954 under the management of Mr. François Leveau, a beer-retailer in Marchienne-au-Pont, who registered the brand and the ownership. The beer was brewed in Dinant.
Over the years production passed successively to Brouwerij Bavery in Couillet, Brouwerij De Smedt, which later became Brouwerij Affligem in Opwijk. Mr. François Leveau sold the brand in 1996, after which the beer was brewed at Brouwerij Amis Réunis in Saint-Amand-les-Warts, France.
Since June 2000, the Abbey of Aulne beers have been brewed again at the site of the Cistercian ruins of the Abbey of Aulne, namely in the restored 18th-century old stables.
