Item Description A Collection of 20 Antique Japanese Edo Period Cast Coins – Tenpō Tsūhō & Kan'ei Tsūhō This lot brings together twenty genuine cast copper-alloy coins from Japan's Edo period, offering a compact but historically rich cross-section of the country's pre-modern currency system. Two oval coins are Tenpō Tsūhō, first cast from 1835 (Tenpō 6) under shogunate authority. Distinguished by their elongated, rounded shape and the obverse inscription "天保通寳," each carried a nominal value of 100 mon, marked on the reverse with "當百" alongside the Gotō family kaō (an official calligraphic seal). Though minted in vast numbers to ease a chronic copper shortage, genuine shogunate-issue Tenpō Tsūhō remain popular with collectors for their distinctive form. The remaining eighteen coins are Kan'ei Tsūhō, Japan's principal circulating currency for roughly 230 years from 1636 (Kan'ei 13) until the mid-20th century. The set includes plain-backed 1-mon copper pieces, brass 4-mon coins bearing the characteristic wave pattern on the reverse (introduced in 1768 and nicknamed "nami-sen," or wave coins), and coins with the reverse mint mark "文," associated with mid-Edo-period casting at Edo Kameido. Together they illustrate several stages of Kan'ei Tsūhō production and denomination.
