Background Information:
This cast copper key dates to the 15th–16th century and represents a type commonly used for securing small caskets, cupboards, chests, or other domestic furnishings during the Late Medieval period. Its open circular bow with a secondary pierced aperture and simple bit are characteristic of functional keys produced by medieval locksmiths for everyday household use.

Keys were indispensable objects in medieval society, where locks protected valuable possessions, documents, clothing, and trade goods. Beyond their practical purpose, keys also carried symbolic meaning, representing authority, trust, and responsibility. The possession of a key often denoted control over a household, storeroom, or chest containing important belongings.

Produced by specialised metalworkers, keys of this type were cast and finished by hand before being individually fitted to their corresponding lock. Although modest in appearance, they reflect the growing sophistication of medieval locking mechanisms and the importance of security within both urban and rural communities across Europe.

Complete medieval keys are increasingly appreciated by collectors, particularly examples retaining their original form and distinctive openwork bow. They provide valuable insight into the craftsmanship and daily life of the Late Middle Ages.

This piece forms a tangible connection to the medieval world, where even simple objects such as keys played an essential role in domestic life, commerce, and personal security."
