Phokaia was an Ionian city on the Aegean coast of western Anatolia, founded by settlers from Phocis and famed for seafaring. Its colonists founded Massalia in Gaul and Alalia in Corsica, while Phokaian ships sailed as far as Iberia. The Persian general Harpagus captured Phokaia in 546 BC, but many inhabitants fled west and the city continued under Persian, Athenian, and later Hellenistic rule.
