Denon - PMA-530 Amplificatore integrato a stato solido

I connected a tuner and speakers and verified its operation; there is no crackling noise. I have wiped it down and used compressed air to clean it. Description: A full-size analogue integrated amplifier built by Nippon Columbia in 1979, at the height of Japan's audio boom. The front panel reads Precision audio component / pre-main amplifier — and the feature set behind it is more serious than the model number suggests. Direct Couple — the switch that matters The PMA-530 gives you a hard bypass of the entire tone control section. Flick DIRECT COUPLE from tone to direct and the green DIRECT lamp lights: bass, treble and the circuitry behind them are lifted out of the signal path completely, leaving the shortest route from input to output the amplifier is capable of. This is not a marketing switch. Tone controls require active stages and coupling capacitors that sit permanently in the audio path, and removing them is the single most effective thing a designer can do for transparency. Most amplifiers at this level in 1979 offered a tone defeat that merely flattened the response while leaving the circuit connected. This one takes the circuit out. Leave it in tone when you need it — the bass and treble controls are there, calibrated ±5 — and switch to direct for critical listening. MM and MC phono, both built in The phono stage handles moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, switchable from the front panel. This is the feature that separates the PMA-530 from most of its contemporaries. In 1979, MC cartridges were the serious listener's choice and most amplifiers required an external step-up transformer or head amp to use one — an extra box, an extra pair of interconnects, an extra noise path. Denon built the MC stage in. Denon had earned the right to. The company's professional recording division supplied the machines Nippon Columbia and NHK cut records on, and in 1972 built the world's first commercially deployed PCM digital recorder — years before the compact disc existed. Denon also made cartridges: the DL-103, developed with NHK for broadcast use, is still in production today and remains one of the most respected MC cartridges ever made. This amplifier's MC input was designed by the same company, for cartridges like that one. A dedicated GND terminal on the rear handles turntable earthing. Volume calibrated in decibels The volume control is not marked 1 to 10. It is scaled in dB attenuation, from −70 through −4 and up. That is a studio convention rather than a consumer one, and it means you can return to an exact listening level rather than approximating it by knob position. Full tape and system flexibility Two independent tape loops (TAPE-1, TAPE-2), each with separate PB and REC connections Two-way dubbing — REC OUT SELECTOR copies tape 1→2 or tape 2→1 directly, without disturbing what you are listening to TAPE MONITOR switching between tape-1, source and tape-2 for off-tape monitoring while recording REC OUT off position — disconnects the recording path entirely, keeping a deck's input circuitry out of the signal chain when you are not recording Two speaker systems SYSTEM-A and SYSTEM-B binding posts on the rear, switchable from the front. Rated for 4–16 ohm loads, with both systems able to run together. Run a main pair and a second room, or A/B two sets of speakers against each other. Subsonic filter A dedicated switch cutting infrasonic content below the audio band — warped-record rumble, turntable motor noise, arm resonance. These frequencies are inaudible but consume amplifier power and force woofer excursion that muddies everything above them. On a vinyl system this is a functional filter, not a nostalgic one. Loudness Front-panel switchable compensation for low-level listening, restoring the bass and treble the ear loses at quiet volumes. Built for a system, not a shelf Two AC outlets on the rear — one unswitched at 250W maximum, one switched at 100W maximum total, powering up your turntable and tuner with the amplifier. This is a component designed as the hub of a rack, in the era when that is what people built. A transformer this size holds its voltage when a bass transient demands current, and that is what you hear as control rather than as volume. Japan domestic model Never released in European or American markets. Runs on AC 100V, so buyers outside Japan will need a step-down transformer — standard practice for Japanese domestic audio, inexpensive, and requiring no modification to the unit. Description:

A full-size analogue integrated amplifier built by Nippon Columbia in 1979, at the height of Japan's audio boom. The front panel reads Precision audio component / pre-main amplifier — and the feature set behind it is more serious than the model number suggests.

Direct Couple — the switch that matters

The PMA-530 gives you a hard bypass of the entire tone control section.

MM and MC phono, both built in

The phono stage handles moving magnet and moving coil cartridges, switchable from the front panel.

Volume calibrated in decibels

The volume control is not marked 1 to 10. It is scaled in dB attenuation, from −70 through −4 and up. That is a studio convention rather than a consumer one, and it means you can return to an exact listening level rather than approximating it by knob position.

Full tape and system flexibility

Two independent tape loops (TAPE-1, TAPE-2), each with separate PB and REC connections
Two-way dubbing — REC OUT SELECTOR copies tape 1→2 or tape 2→1 directly, without disturbing what you are listening to
TAPE MONITOR switching between tape-1, source and tape-2 for off-tape monitoring while recording
REC OUT off position — disconnects the recording path entirely, keeping a deck's input circuitry out of the signal chain when you are not recording

Two speaker systems

SYSTEM-A and SYSTEM-B binding posts on the rear, switchable from the front. Rated for 4–16 ohm loads, with both systems able to run together. Run a main pair and a second room, or A/B two sets of speakers against each other.

Subsonic filter

A dedicated switch cutting infrasonic content below the audio band — warped-record rumble, turntable motor noise, arm resonance. These frequencies are inaudible but consume amplifier power and force woofer excursion that muddies everything above them. On a vinyl system this is a functional filter, not a nostalgic one.

Loudness

Front-panel switchable compensation for low-level listening, restoring the bass and treble the ear loses at quiet volumes.

Built for a system, not a shelf

Two AC outlets on the rear — one unswitched at 250W maximum, one switched at 100W maximum total, powering up your turntable and tuner with the amplifier. This is a component designed as the hub of a rack, in the era when that is what people built.

Weight as specification

11.25kg is the number to pay attention to. That mass is transformer, heatsink and reservoir capacitance — a linear power supply built without regard to shipping cost. Modern amplifiers weigh less because switching supplies are cheaper, not because they perform better. A transformer this size holds its voltage when a bass transient demands current, and that is what you hear as control rather than as volume.
