Item Description This is an original etching and aquatint titled "Stargazer" by the Japanese printmaker Riko Maeshiro (真栄城理子, b. 1992), created in 2012 and numbered 32 from an edition of 50. Maeshiro's copperplate prints explore a hazy, dreamlike state suspended between waking and sleep — in her own words, she fills the plate with ink to create a black sea, then wipes it away to reveal light rising up like a jellyfish, glowing and drifting in the darkness. Comes with the original Certificate of Authenticity from Reijinsha Gallery. Artist Profile Riko Maeshiro (真栄城理子, b. 1992) was born in Kanagawa Prefecture and raised in Shizuoka Prefecture. She graduated from the printmaking course at Tohoku University of Art & Design in 2014 and completed her master's degree there in 2016. Her early achievements include selection for the 1st FEI Print Award (FEI Art Museum Yokohama) in 2012, the Awagami International Miniprint Exhibition in 2013, and the 9th Kochi International Triennial Exhibition of Prints in 2014. She has been repeatedly selected for the Japan Print Association's exhibitions, winning the Print Association Award at its 85th Anniversary Print Exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in 2017. Working primarily in etching and aquatint, Maeshiro describes her copperplate prints as ambiguous, liminal spaces where this world and another dissolve into one another — luminous, organic forms emerging from fields of black ink, evoking dreams, drifting jellyfish, and half-remembered states between sleep and waking. She continues to work and exhibit from her studio in Chiba Prefecture, with her prints today held and collected internationally.
