A refined Japanese Satsuma ceramic dish, finely decorated in polychrome enamels and gold with an elaborate scene populated by numerous samurai.
The central composition depicts a group of armoured warriors gathered within a landscape of streams, rocks, pine trees, and traditional architecture. The figures, portrayed in a variety of poses and wearing richly detailed garments and armour, are embellished with extensive gilding and intricate ornamental patterns.
On the right, a large canopy richly decorated in gold frames part of the scene, while the landscape opens in the background among trees and rocky outcrops. The ground is further enriched with dense gold stippling.
The border features an elaborate geometric and floral decoration in gold, red, and black, framing the central scene.
Signed Hododa Gyokuzan zō beneath the base, accompanied by the circular cross crest of the Shimazu family.
Satsuma ware is one of the finest expressions of Japanese ceramics. Originating from the ancient province of Satsuma (now Kagoshima), it was produced as early as the Edo period (1603–1868) using low-temperature firing, which gives it the characteristic surface with craquelure and vibrant decorations.
